A Ukrainian pilot lost his life, and several crew members were injured when a Russian missile attack occurred on the KMAX Ruler, a bulk carrier flying the flag of Liberia, as it approached the port in the Odesa area.
The missile hit the ship as it was approaching the port, resulting in yet another traumatic event in the ongoing war.
Attackers used a Kh-31P anti-radar missile to target one of the ports in the Odesa region on November 8.
The missile impact killed the Ukrainian pilot on the ship’s bridge, and another port worker was hurt in the same incident. Three crew members from the Philippines were among the injured.
There have been other attacks on civilian vessels before. According to Oleksandr Kubrakov, Ukraine’s Minister of Community Development, Territories, and Infrastructure, five ships were attacked by Russian forces in the Black Sea in July.
Furthermore, persistent threats against civilian ships in the area have been reported by the Ukrainian Southern Defense Forces.
According to Nataliya Humenyuk, a defence forces spokesperson, occupying forces frequently drop aerial bombs in ship-frequented regions along the “grain corridor.”
This tragic incident is just one more in the long list of losses and destruction brought about by the ongoing conflict in the area.
With hostilities intensifying, the international community is keeping a close eye on the situation and growing concerns about the safety of civilian ships travelling through the Black Sea.
