Neptune Marine, a leading Dutch supplier of marine solutions, won the coveted Ship of the Year Award 2023 for Canopée.
With its wind-assisted marine propulsion, this double-propelled open-top roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship is a revolutionary step toward decarbonising industrial shipping.
The prize was announced on November 6 at the Maritime Awards Gala, which took place before Rotterdam’s Europort 2023 exhibition.
Canopée is a revolutionary hybrid industrial cargo ship that Alizés, a joint venture between Zéphyr & Borée and JIFMAR Offshore Services, owns. It is the first ship of its kind in the world.
Canopée is a remarkable vessel that combines wind assistance and diesel propulsion to balance traditional and sustainable energy sources.
It measures a staggering 121 meters in length and 22 meters in width. With four automated, movable wings supplied by the French company AYRO, the ship’s propulsion system seeks to minimise fuel consumption by an average of thirty per cent, thereby reducing the vessel’s environmental impact.
Canopée, created mainly to transport fuel and parts for Arian rockets from France to French Guiana, aligns with the industry’s general environmental sustainability objectives.
According to Bachmann Electronic GmbH, this innovative strategy symbolises the height of Dutch maritime brilliance and marks a revolutionary development in global naval commerce.
Shipping industry standards were raised by the hybrid cargo ship’s creative design and dedication to minimising environmental impact.
The Canopée project is a prime example of how cutting-edge technology and environmental responsibility can coexist peacefully, highlighting Neptune Marine’s commitment to influencing the direction of marine transportation.
