According to a port official, a Turkish ship delivering supplies for field hospitals reached Monday in the port of El Arish (Egypt), close to the Rafah border crossing with the war-torn Gaza Strip.
It is the first-of-its-kind assistance vessel that arrived in Egypt since the outbreak of war on 7 October, when the Hamas militants in Gaza started an offensive on Israel, killing over 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians, per Israeli officials.
Israel has retaliated with a ferocious bombing campaign and ground invasion, which Hamas authorities claim have killed over 11,000 people, largely civilians, including countless children.
As reported by AFP, the ship was bringing materials, generators, and ambulances to set up eight field hospitals.
The Turkish official went on to say that Ankara has asked Cairo for permission to establish the field hospitals at El Arish, which is around 40 kilometres from Israel’s only border entry into Gaza.
The Egyptian authorities gave us the go-ahead. According to the official, we will build these facilities in the locations designated by Egyptian authorities.
The shipment came as Hamas government officials declared every hospital in northern Gaza “out of service” due to fuel shortages caused by fighting with Israeli forces.
Per Youssef Abu Rish, deputy health minister for the Hamas government, the death toll in Al-Shifa has gone up to 27 adult intensive care patients as well as seven neonates since the weekend due to fuel shortages at the institution.
