During an “Extended Range Operational Deployment” within the Atlantic Ocean along Africa’s west coast, INS Sumedha successfully concluded a 31-day anti-piracy operation in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).
This was the Navy’s second such patrol in the critical maritime region, which supplies an important part of India’s energy needs.
The mission is significant because the Gulf of Guinea, which has large quantities of hydrocarbons and minerals, has long been plagued by piracy, making it one of the world’s most dangerous maritime spaces.
INS Tarkash conducted the first anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Guinea in September-October 2022.
INS Sumedha’s deployment strengthened navy-to-navy relations with countries in the region, including Senegal, Nigeria, Angola, Ghana, Togo, and Namibia.
