Parts Of River Rhine In Germany Closed To Shipping After Heavy Rains

Due to an increase in water levels brought on by recent heavy rains, German officials announced on Thursday that several sections of the Rhine River in Germany are now restricted to shipping.

Shipping on the Rhine River has ceased near Maxau in southern Germany, according to the German agency responsible for inland waterways navigation, WSA.

A high water level makes it impossible for ships to pass under bridges, which keeps them from getting to Switzerland.

Ships can navigate the river’s northern and central sections.

The water level prediction department of the state government of Rheinland-Pfalz stated that lower water levels are expected, allowing shipping to restart later on Thursday or Friday.

The Rhine is a crucial transportation channel for minerals, coal, and petroleum goods like animal feed, grains, and heating oil.

Due to recent abnormally dry summers, the river has frequently experienced low water levels.
