Cyclone Midhili’s severe weather caused a cargo ship, “MV Prince of Ghashiakhali,” to capsize in the Pashur Channel of Mongla Port in Bagerhat. The incident happened around 9:30 am when the ship struck a sandbar close to Kananagar, causing a hull breach.
The ship had loaded cargo from a foreign commercial vessel in the Harbaria region and was headed to Nawapara in Jashore, carrying 800 tonnes of coal.
Vice president of the Bangladesh Lighter Workers Association, Mainul Hossain Mintu, confirmed that all 12 crew members survived the vessel’s sinking and made it safely ashore by swimming.
The vice president of the Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union of the Mongla branch, Mainul Islam, claims the shipmaster failed to steer the sinking vessel onto a shoal to save it.
The cyclone’s lousy weather forced the port authorities to temporarily halt cargo loading and unloading.
Mainly, incidents involving the sinking of ships carrying coal give rise to worries about possible environmental risks because the toxic particles in the coal can contaminate the water and endanger aquatic life.
Md. Bashir Hossain, the ship’s owner, reported severe financial losses due to the mishap. The sinking happened in the Charkana region, away from the port’s main channel.
