The Ocean Cleanup, A.P. Moller-Maersk, and Maersk Supply Service have decided to extend their collaboration to validate a system that reliably removes significant amounts of ocean plastic.
An international non-profit organisation called The Ocean Cleanup has effectively created a system to address this environmental threat by removing ocean plastic.
The joint endeavour seeks to validate the technology from an ecological and engineering perspective. This validation is essential to show governments, organisations, and possible funders that the technology is viable and can remove plastic debris from the ocean.
The extended partnership has the vital support of A.P. Moller-Maersk and Maersk Supply Service. Their contributions include project management, logistics services for waste collection and recycling transportation, and the operation of two Maersk Supply Service vessels towing the plastic capture system.
Furthermore, The Ocean Cleanup will receive a one-time grant from the A.P. Moller Foundation.
The system validation is expected to be finished by the end of 2024. An environmental assessment that contrasts the effects of plastic pollution with the participating vessels’ greenhouse gas emissions will be a part of the validation process.
The Ocean Cleanup hopes to obtain support from the general public, governments, and other foundations after its successful validation to expand the operation significantly beginning in 2025.
The project has progressed from its original concept to a working system in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch thanks to the dedication and support of A.P. Moller – Maersk, Maersk Supply Service, and the A.P. Moller Foundation.
The Ocean Cleanup’s founder and CEO, Boyan Slat, acknowledged Maersk Supply Service and A.P. Moller-Maersk for their dedication and emphasised how crucial their support has been in getting the project to the point where it is prepared for scale-up.
The Ocean Cleanup views the extra funding from the A.P. Moller Foundation as a significant asset to the organisation’s 2024 goals. A.P. Moller–Maersk, The Ocean Cleanup, and Maersk Supply Service have an agreement that will expire at the end of 2024.
