Severe flooding and storms have killed nine people in Turkey, according to officials, including a seaman who perished when a cargo vessel sank off the Black Sea coast of Turkey. Eleven other members of the crew have been reported missing.
The Turkish-flagged Kafkametler drowned on Sunday after colliding with a barrier outside the harbour at Eregli, roughly 200 kilometres to the east of Istanbul.
According to Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister, the tanker banged against the breakwater numerous times before sinking on its approach to the western Turkish city of Izmir.
Because of the inclement weather, the search and rescue effort was delayed for several hours. However, as the situation improved, rescuers discovered the body of the ship’s cook on Monday, according to Uraloglu.
According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, at least three individuals were killed in the storms in Eregli. At the same time, five more perished in the provinces of Diyarbakir and Batman shortly after being washed away by flooding produced by severe rains. A grandma and three grandchildren were among the people killed. Fifty persons were injured.
Another cargo ship, the Cameroonian-flagged Pallada, broke up after coming aground amid 5-meter waves off Eregli, according to the Maritime General Directorate. All 13 members of the crew received rescue safely.
Inmates were transferred from Eregli’s prison to nearby institutions owing to rising water levels, according to Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc.
Two persons were killed in neighbouring Bulgaria by gale-force winds, torrential rain, and snow. Officials announced a state of emergency in the city of Varna.
