The Philippines announced on Wednesday that 17 Filipino sailors had been kidnapped by Houthi rebels after they hijacked an Israel-linked vessel in the Red Sea.
Houthi forces captured Galaxy Leader, holding 25 individuals, including 17 Filipinos, according to Eduardo de Vega, the Foreign Affairs Undersecretary, per Manila’s daily Phil Star.
De Vega is concerned since it is tied to Israel’s confrontation with Hamas.
What was informed is that no damage is going to be done to any foreign crew member, he went on to say. They intend to meet with government officials, he added.
The Houthi group stated on Sunday that it had seized an Israeli vessel in the Red Sea and was transporting it to the Yemeni coast.
The Houthi said the ship was taken in solidarity with the Palestinian individuals in Gaza and to put pressure on Israel to stop the onslaught on Gaza.
Israel confirmed that the Houthis seized an international cargo vessel in the Red Sea but stated that there were no Israelis on board.
