On Saturday, November 18, the product tanker dubbed the MT King Rich, registered with Sierra Leone, informed that it had been taking on water in the Philippines’ northernmost seas, around 80 nm from the little island of Badoc.
The 13,925 dwt ship, constructed in 1990, was travelling empty when it met the powerful waves after being a troublesome chemical tanker that faced risky circumstances at sea.
Later, MT KING RICH skipper Van Swandi revealed that the ship’s propeller shaft failed around 13:00 on Saturday, flooding the engine room.
Despite their initial attempts, the crew determined they could not pump water out of the vessel’s ballast at that rate.
The 13 people from Indonesia and three Chinese crewmembers were rescued around four hours afterwards when the Hong Kong-registered container vessel Sheng An came across the two rafts.
After being safely loaded onto the container vessel, the crew members travelled to Subic Bay, Philippines, where they arrived early Sunday morning.
The Coast Guard reports that thanks to the containership’s efforts, all rescued crew members are in good physical condition.
