A Chinese-built unmanned vessel for cloud and sea-fog observation has begun its first long-distance voyage in the Yellow Sea, completing 110 nautical miles thus far.
The ship set out from a port-based in Jiangsu Province, constantly operating for 16 hours at sea while collecting three-dimensional fog and cloud data.
According to the China Meteorological Administration, the successful launch proves the vessel’s ability to carry out large-scale hydrological and meteorological observations at sea.
China’s current sea fog observation stations are close to the coast, with barely a few kilometres of detection ranges. The unmanned ship, on the other hand, can extend the surveillance range to 180 nautical miles from the coast.
Per the administration, the self-navigating ship can also collaborate with meteorological satellites and shore-based radars to expand the observation area and improve accuracy.
