The ITF Seafarers’ Trust is financing wellness education and assistance for the well-being of Indian trainees and cadets. The program intends to change the nation’s cadet welfare landscape.
It is a collaboration between the grant-making trust and the International Maritime Welfare Sailors’ Society.
As part of the partnership, a 3-day Wellness at Sea training course will be held with the Society’s annual India cadet conference. India’s maritime schools and institutions will also receive this training.
The Sailors’ Society will also provide resources for their Well-being at Sea Awareness Campaign to the involved schools, and they will have permission to a liaison officer for support whenever needed.
There is still more welfare boost available after this. The cadet newsletters, Peer-to-Peer Aid Groups, and an e-learning program that culminates in a certificate upon completion will all benefit cadets offered by the charity.
To improve accessibility, a special 24-hour helpline will be set up, manned by a team of trained individuals proficient in cadet-specific language and aware of their unique difficulties.
The ITFST’s Program Development Manager, Abdulgani Serang, expressed gratitude for the Sailors’ Society’s initiative and emphasised the significance of preparing cadets for life’s challenges at sea.
Serang praised the initiative as a well-organized and thorough approach to fostering awareness and resilience, acknowledging both the benefits and difficulties of a career at sea.
Johan Smith, the Sailors’ Society’s Head of Wellness, pointed out the importance of the program in preparing cadets for survival at sea.
Using information gathered over three years of cadet conferences, Smith highlighted the apparent discrepancy between reality and perception.
Early career engagement with cadets builds familiarity and trust, facilitating cadets’ ability to seek assistance during their maritime adventures.
The initiative is anticipated to have a noticeable and long-lasting impact on the maritime industry overall and individual cadets.
