Per the Pentagon, five Somali nationals were apprehended after boarding a tanker ship off the coast of Yemen. After a US warship and allied ships replied and requested the vessel’s release, the five armed persons left the tanker M/V Central Park, which is related to an Israel-affiliated firm.
Five armed people attempted to depart aboard a tiny boat. The Mason followed the attackers, leading to their eventual surrender, according to Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Pat Ryder, referencing the USS Mason destroyer.
Initial indications indicate that these five people are Somali, according to Ryder, who described the incident as piracy-related.
The armed persons attempted to enter the M/V Central Park’s crew cabin after boarding the vessel on Sunday, but the crew was able to lock themselves into a safe zone, he claimed.
Following the attempted ship capture, two ballistic missiles were launched from an area held by Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The missiles landed roughly 10 nautical miles from the Mason and Central Park, causing no damage to the vessels, according to Ryder, who declined to speculate whether the two instances were connected.
Since Hamas militants launched an unprecedented onslaught on Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people, the Huthis have unleashed an array of drone as well as missile strikes.
Per Gaza’s Hamas government, about 15,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been wounded in Israeli aerial and ground operations in Palestinian territory as the war began.
These killings sparked considerable outrage in the Middle East and fueled attacks against American forces in the area as well as Israel by armed forces opposed to both.
