France’s President Emmanuel Macron stated that a vessel that France has dispatched has moored off the coast of El Arish based in Egypt’s north Sinai and will operate as a floating hospital for the Palestinian civilians injured in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
According to a French ambassador, the Dixmude ship carries 40 medical beds, increasing the capacity of medical facilities set up in the desert in northern Sinai surrounding Gaza by 10%.
The ship has a helicopter landing pad to facilitate the rapid transfer of patients from the Rafah crossing onto the vessel. Docking large ships off the Gaza Strip has become impossible due to damage caused by conflict.
The Dixmude is expected to be operating within the next hours or days, according to the French ambassador, who adds that Paris has been coordinating the project with Egypt’s officials and humanitarian organizations on the ground.
The diplomat informs doctors from the French defence ministry will man it in addition to its civilian health sanitary reserve that will be sent abroad for the first time.
Israel has been advocating for field hospitals as well as other alternatives to Gaza’s existing medical facilities, claiming that Hamas operates command facilities beneath them.
Following the estimates provided by Hamas-controlled health authorities, there are currently 30,000 injured Palestinians in Gaza, per the World Health Organization.
Per the diplomat, Paris is ready to transport around 50 injured Gazans back to France for medical treatment.
France has refrained from advocating for a total cease-fire, defending Israel’s right to defensive tactics against Hamas. Per the French ambassador, the ultimate goal is a cease-fire.
