Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ division Mitsubishi Shipbuilding recently commemorated the christening and handover of a revolutionary vessel called “EXCOOL.”
A significant advancement in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technology is represented by this demonstration ship, which is intended to transport liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2).
The 72-meter-long, 1,450-cubic-meter vessel will be a crucial component of the “CCUS R&D and Demonstration Related Project / Demonstration Project on CO2 Transportation / Large-scale CCUS Demonstration in Tomakomai,” which is being led by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization.
The vessel was turned over to its charterer, Nippon Gas Line Co., Ltd., during the ceremony organised at MHI’s Shimonoseki Shipyard.
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s experience with liquefied gas carriers—both LNG and LPG—has been critical to the development and design of the ship, including the cargo containment system. Nippon Gas Line is in charge of the NEDO project, and the EXCOOL will go through transportation demonstration tests to gather operational data.
Furthermore, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. and Ochanomizu University will conduct safety evaluations and research on LCO2 transportation operations on behalf of the Engineering Advancement Association of Japan.
The program aligns with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s “MARINE FUTURE STREAM” growth strategy, which is centring on using the carbon cycle and renewable energy to decarbonise the maritime sector.
The company wants to be a part of the global decarbonisation effort as a marine system and aggressively pursue the commercialisation of LCO2 handling systems.
This innovative discovery coincides with a projected rise in the market for LCO2 carriers due to the increased interest in CCUS as a strategy for creating a society that is carbon neutral.
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s dedication to development places them in a unique position to influence the outcome of ecologically friendly marine solutions in the future.
