On Wednesday, a US Navy cruiser close to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait reportedly shot down a drone that was fired from Yemen, the US military claimed, the latest in a series of threats from Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
According to US Central Command, the USS Carney, a Navy destroyer, shot down the drone, an Iranian KAS-04 that had been released from a Houthi-controlled region in Yemen and was moving for the vessel.
The ship was sailing in the southern Red Sea, heading for the strait. The Carney was escorting USNS Supply, a Military Sealift Command quick combat supply ship, and another US-flagged and crewed ship bringing military materiel to the region at the time of the morning shootdown. Per the leadership, there were no reported injuries or damage to US soldiers or ships.
A day earlier, an Iranian drone flew roughly 1,500 yards of the Dwight D. Eisenhower while performing flight operations in international seas.
The drone “violated safety precautions” by not keeping over 10 nautical miles from the ship, according to Navy Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Naval Forces Central Command. Despite many warnings, the drone eventually turned away.
Iran’s dangerous, unprofessional, and reckless actions endanger US and partner nation lives and must be stopped immediately, says Cooper.
Iranian state television previously released footage from the drone that followed the carrier, which includes data indicating that it captured the warship this weekend at the Persian Gulf’s constricted mouth, the Strait of Hormuz.
The clip shows aircraft on the deck of the Eisenhower. When American aircraft carriers approach the Gulf, Iranian drones are routinely deployed.
Yet another Navy destroyer, the USS Thomas Hudner, fired down a drone that was flying toward the vessel as it sailed in the southern Red Sea earlier this month. It was also approaching the Bab el-Mandeb Strait when it shot the drone down over the water.
The Red Sea, extending from Egypt’s Suez Canal to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait dividing the Arabian Peninsula from Africa, is an important shipping and oil supply route.
Since the commencement of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, the US Navy has stationed additional ships in the Mediterranean, escalating tensions in the region.
