Suez Canal Navigation Remains Unchanged Despite Containership Collison With Floating Bridge

The Singaporean-flagged containership One Orpheus lost control of its steering while travelling from Singapore to the Netherlands, striking a floating bridge in the eastern lane of the Suez Canal.

The incident happened in the expanded section of the canal that was finished in 2015 and was attributed to a rudder malfunction.

The Suez Canal Authority guaranteed that ships would continue to pass through this crucial trade route that links Asia and Europe despite the collision.

Four tugs were sent out to help the Meiji Shipping-owned, 336-meter-long vessel Ocean Network Express (ONE), which had chartered to address the situation.

Ships heading south were diverted from the extended section of the canal to its original branch, while southbound vessels carried on with their regular transit.

The canal authority announced that One Orpheus and six other ships in its convoy could continue their travels after the damaged rudder was successfully fixed with the assistance of tugboats.

It’s important to note that Egypt has been working to expand its Suez Canal, which is an important shipping route and a major source of foreign exchange. These actions come after a major container ship grounded in 2021, causing traffic through the canal to be blocked for six days.
