Crowley And Carbon Ridge Collaborate To Launch Pilot Project For Onboard Carbon Capture

Crowley and Carbon Ridge Inc., a well-known developer of modular onboard carbon capture and storage solutions (OCCS), have joined up to launch an advanced pilot project meant to lower emissions on Crowley’s Storm international container ship, with assistance from the Maritime Environmental and Technical Assistance (META) program of the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD).

Carbon Ridge’s patent-pending second-generation carbon capture technology is being implemented in this collaborative effort. The pilot program will operate, measure, and optimise the technology’s efficacy in real maritime environments—both at port and sea—under a cooperative agreement with MARAD. The project involves designing, producing, and integrating a diluted form of Carbon Ridge’s large-scale carbon capture system.

The CEO of Carbon Ridge, Chase Dwyer, expressed enthusiasm for the project and emphasised its importance in the changing field of carbon capture technology. He highlighted the possibility of major emissions reductions, allowing ship owners and operators to meet internal decarbonisation targets and future-ready their vessels against upcoming regulations.

The engineering services group at Crowley, which specialises in project management, waterfront engineering, and vessel design and engineering, is spearheading the integration of the pilot system on board the container ship Storm, which is servicing the Caribbean and United States. The ship’s main deck will house two 40-foot container units housing the carbon capture system.

The Senior Vice President and General Manager, Brett Bennett of Crowley Logistics, highlighted the company’s dedication to cleaner maritime operations and the project as a significant step toward achieving net-zero emissions aligned with their sustainability strategy.

The MARAD Office of Environment and Innovation’s Director, Daniel Yuska, stated that MARAD is happy to work with industry partners through META to highlight cutting-edge technological applications that have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry significantly.

After onshore testing, the pilot unit will be installed on the ship in 2024, which will be a significant step forward for the maritime industry’s adoption of sustainable practices.
