Russia Unveils Its Naval Power Surge Showcasing Advanced Nuclear Submarines

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has reportedly promised to strengthen Russian naval prowess after the nation inaugurated two nuclear submarines. Putin has travelled to Severodvinsk to view Emperor Alexander III and Krasnoyarsk at the Sevmash shipbuilding yard, wherein these had been built for over six years.

The two subs are due to be a part of the Russian Pacific fleet. With such vessels and weapons, Russia will feel that it’s safe, Putin informed the naval officers and other officials at the ceremony.

Emperor Alexander III is part of the Russian new Borei (Arctic Wind) class of advanced nuclear-powered subs, each of them armed with 16 nuclear-tipped intercontinental Bulava ballistic missiles. The Borei is the first-ever new-generation undersea vessel Russia has launched since the Cold War.

The Krasnoyarsk reportedly belongs to the Yasen (Ash Tree) class of multipurpose subs that are equipped with long-range as well as high-precision missiles, which Putin mentioned could easily strike the targets at sea and on land.

Putin, who last Friday declared that he’d seek a fifth presidential term in an election in March, has repeatedly talked up the potential of the Russian new-generation weapons, especially its nuclear systems, and their value as a deterrent.

Security analysts have stated that nuclear arms have assumed higher importance in thinking and rhetoric since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, where the conventional forces of Putin are reportedly locked in a war of attrition without an end in sight. Russia has been building eight more nuclear subs – three that belong to the Borei class and five to the Yasen class.
