On December 19, during a security operation at Foynes, Ireland, a joint team of Customs and Guards Security officials discovered at least 300 kilograms of high-grade cocaine aboard the Bulgarian bulk carrier VERILA.
It is reported that the search went on in the hopes of discovering more drugs, totalling about 500 kg. The cocaine was said to be thrown overboard in a predefined location since it was packaged in a buoyant bale equipped with a GPS beacon.
The vessel left Montreal on December 9 and arrived in Canada, where she carried grain after arriving there in early November from Brazil. The crew and ship are being held while the investigation is ongoing; there has been no update on any potential crew involvement.
