The Indian Navy is scheduled to commission its newest, most stealthy guided-missile destroyer, named “Imphal.” At the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, the newest stealth-guided missile destroyer will be put into service. The chief guest at the commissioning event will be Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
One noteworthy fact is that INS Imphal is the biggest and most sophisticated destroyer, given the name of a northeastern city. Per the Navy, the name Imphal was chosen to honour Manipur’s sacrifice made during India’s independence movement.
This is an appropriate homage to Manipur’s efforts and sacrifices made throughout India’s freedom movement, whether it was during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 or when Netaji raised the INA flag for the first time ever at Moirang on April 14, 1944, or the fierce Battle of Imphal, which saw Indians on both sides and British as well as Imperial Japanese soldiers, that changed the course of the Burma campaign, the Second World War’s outcome, and the nature of the postwar international order, per the Navy statement.
The Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau created the state-of-the-art warship Imphal, which was built by Mazgaon Dock Limited. The ship, which was constructed by Mazgaon Dock Limited, is proud to have received major support from the private as well as the public sectors, including DRDO and MSMEs.
With an astounding 75% native content, it demonstrates India’s prowess in building warships. After trials, Imphal was given to India’s Navy on 20 October of this year. In November, the extended-range supersonic BrahMos missile was successfully tested.
