US Navy Successfully Intercepts Houthi Drone And Ballistic Missile Attack In Red Sea

A US Navy ship deployed in the Red Sea successfully intercepted both a drone and an anti-ship ballistic missile on Thursday night. The targets were launched into the Southern Red Sea by Houthi rebels, an Iranian-backed force.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) verified the incident, emphasising that the USS Mason neutralised the threats. Fortunately, no damage or casualties were reported despite eighteen ships, mostly cargo vessels, in the area.

This is the 22nd attempt by Houthi militants to strike foreign vessels since mid-October. In reaction to the deterioration of the situation, the United States has announced the formation of an international task force for maritime security. Given the Houthis’ robust control over Yemeni territory, State Department officials stressed that the Biden administration’s principal goal is to unify disparate foreign powers to fight the Houthi threat.

Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, emphasised the severity of the situation in the Red Sea, calling the Houthi actions disruptive, hazardous, and an explicit violation of international law.

The US has issued warnings to the Houthis via diplomatic channels, urging them to stop their indiscriminate strikes. Despite these warnings, the Houthi rebels intend to continue their operations until Israel’s conflict in Gaza is resolved.
