RUEN, a Maltese-flagged commercial vessel, was hijacked on 14 December in the Arabian Sea. It is still anchored off the coast of Somalia while authorities are monitoring it closely.
A Bulgarian Company was managing the vessel, and the circumstances around its hijacking are still not clear, per reports. There were 18 sailors of Myanmar, Angolan, and Bulgarian nationalities onboard the vessel when the incident occurred.
Maltese Authorities, Armed Forces of Malta and the European Naval Force Somalia Operation Atalanta coordinate joint monitoring efforts.
Per Transport Malta, RUEN’s trajectory took it near Somalia’s northeastern coast before it changed its way southward to Eyl.
The vessel’s movements have been closely monitored by military assets deployed from EU Operation Atalanta and Information Fusion Centre- Indian Ocean Region. Per the new update, the vessel is still anchored 2.5 nm off the coast at Baqbaq, Somalia.
