Lemissoler Navigation has received (AiP) approval in principle from ABS for designing the first-ever methanol-oriented Ultramax bulk carrier in China, with a displacement of 65K DWT.
Lemissoler and SDARI collaborated to develop the design of Lem65ePlus-SDARI Methanol, which explores the viability of utilizing methanol as fuel to cut carbon emissions and meet the IMO’s net-zero target by 2050. Lemissoler Navigation claims that the ship has been optimized and that an evaluation of its initial Energy Efficiency Design Index (abbreviated the EEDI) showed that it significantly surpasses EEDI Phase 3 requirements.
Additionally, the vice president at SDARI, Zhou Zhi-Yong, said that the organization is constantly dedicated to creating unique solutions that meet customer needs and providing an optimum design that complies with any future maritime laws and regulations.
Methanol is an up-and-coming fuel source to lower shipping emissions, and the new design from Lemissoler is a golden opportunity for Chinese shipbuilding to reflect leadership yet again in the decarbonization of the industry, said Vassilios Kroustallis, the ABS Senior VP of Global Business Development. ABS executed the design reviews based on class and statutory needs per the statements.
