Singapore Chooses Innovative Vessel Charging Concept For Pilot Programs

Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (abbreviated the MPA) has chosen firms to pilot vessel charging concepts in Singapore. This selection procedure follows the call for proposal by MPA in August last year to operate, develop, and handle the e-HC charging points in Singapore. From the 12 proposals received, MPA picked Pyxis Maritime, Pyxis Energy, and SP Mobility partnership’s concept for trials at the Marina South Pier. Besides, MPA chose Yinson Electric’s and Seatrium’s concepts for extensive development before testing.

Pyxis Energy, SP Mobility, and Pyxis Maritime partnership’s concept is based on Direct Current charging and was chosen for the viability of the price proposed on the charging model and their extensive experience and proven track record of prior implementations of demanding points on electric vehicles.

While MPA is creating the national standards for e-HC charging infrastructure, their suggested charging point for the CFP above also fits the national standard for charging electric vehicles established by Technical Reference 25:2022. To charge infrastructure optimization while facilitating the collection of extensive data for the trial, the collaboration also intends to operate the unique fleet of e-HCs at the Marina South Pier.

The pilot program is scheduled to run from March 2024 through March 2026, with a one-year extension. Pending the pilot’s findings, the concept can also be applied to other sites to support e-HC operations at the Port of Singapore. IMPA has assessed the potential of the innovative mobile charging concept proposed by Seatrium and a high-power (350-450kW) DC Charger by Yinson Electric.

MPA will work with the two firms to develop the proposals further for future Singapore applications via R&D collaboration. From 2030, new harbour craft operating at the Port of Singapore must be electric, capable of using B100 biofuel, or compatible with net zero fuels such as hydrogen. MPA plans to roll out the charging infrastructure for e-HC operations from 2025 in Singapore.
