Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd Announces Long-Term Ambitious Collaboration

A.P. Moller-Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd AG have announced “Gemini Cooperation,” a ground-breaking long-term operating partnership beginning in February 2025. The main goal of this partnership is to create an adaptable, connected ocean network with the highest level of dependability in the business.

Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen was excited about the partnership, saying that working with Maersk will enable them to improve the quality they provide to clients. They will also benefit from increased operational efficiency and collaborative efforts to quicken the industry’s decarbonisation. A fleet pool consisting of approximately 290 vessels, with a combined capacity of 3.4 million containers (TEU), will be involved in the partnership. Hapag-Lloyd will contribute 40% of the fleet, with Maersk expected to deploy 60%.

“We are pleased to enter this cooperation with Hapag-Lloyd, which is the ideal ocean partner on our strategic journey,” said Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc, highlighting the partnership’s strategic importance. He further added that by beginning this collaboration, they will be able to provide customers with an adaptable ocean network that will raise the standard for dependability in the sector. After entirely phasing the network, the two companies agreed to strive for schedule reliability above 90%. Contractual duties and a robust governance model support this ambitious objective. Clients can expect faster transit times in busy port-to-port routes, higher-quality services, and easier access to strategically located maritime centres.

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have set aggressive decarbonisation goals for their fleets: Maersk wants to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, while Hapag-Lloyd intends to do so by 2045. By the end of January 2025, Hapag-Lloyd will withdraw from THE Alliance to enable this cooperation. Furthermore, as stated in January 2023, the 2M collaboration between Maersk and MSC would expire in January 2025. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will systematically organise the shift from their existing partnerships to the new operational cooperation throughout 2024. Customers will continue to get service without interruption as long as existing agreements are respected.

The “Gemini Cooperation” will begin in February 2025, and both companies will supply specialised operational teams to oversee the partnership. Asia/US East Coast, Asia/US West Coast, Asia/Middle East, Asia/North Europe, Asia/Mediterranean, Middle East–India/Europe, and Transatlantic are the seven trades that the network will serve. The collaboration, which consists of 26 mainline routes, will be strengthened by an international network of specialised shuttles that provide quick connections and adaptable capacity between centres and the ports that shuttle services serve. New vessel timetables and other information will be released when available. The partnership seeks to provide customers with unmatched service by utilising Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk’s vast global networks, terminal presence, and logistical experience.
