Singapore’s Ship Registry Hits 100M GT With Eagle Veracruz Registration

The very large crude carrier (VLCC) owned by AET, the Eagle Veracruz, was registered on January 23, 2024, marking a significant milestone for Singapore’s Registry of Ships (SRS) as it surpassed 100 million gross tonnage (GT). One of the best ship registries in the world, the SRS is run by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Since its founding in 1966, the Singapore Maritime Safety Authority (SRS) has been an essential supervisor of vessels flying the Singapore flag. It has enforced compliance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations for improved safety, effectiveness, and environmental protection in international shipping. The SRS is one of the biggest ship registries in the world, with over 4,000 vessels totalling over 100 million gross tonnages (GT) and one of the best-quality fleets that are also among the youngest.

The LNG VLCC Eagle Veracruz is a dual-fuel vessel named after the Mexican State of Veracruz, where one of Mexico’s oldest ports is located. It is over 330 meters long and has a volume of more than 156,000 GT. Energy-efficient design features include a wake duct to reduce fuel use, an improved rudder design, and an optimised hull form. The primary engine’s modular design provides for future refit possibilities, including using zero- and low-carbon fuels.

The SRS is dedicated to decarbonising and digitising the maritime industry. Twenty-two recently registered ships in Singapore were awarded Green Ship Certificates in 2023 as part of the Green Ship Program, demonstrating the dedication to minimising environmental effects. The MPA expects an increase in the number of environmentally friendly vessels flying the Singaporean flag in the future.

The SRS’s expansion can be attributed to its position as a reputable register that is trustworthy, efficient, and professionally administered. The fleet comprises tankers, bulk carriers, cargo ships, and many offshore vessels serving the oil and gas sector.
Singapore’s maritime industry is booming, and the SRS is essential. The city-state surpassed the 100 million GT threshold in 2023, demonstrating its dominance in the bunkering and maritime sectors. This accomplishment was realised with Eagle Veracruz’s registration into the registry, and the SRS still adheres to IMO regulations for environmental protection, economy, and safety.

The Green Ship Certificates program recognises shipowners that employ low-carbon fuels and energy-efficient technologies, among other measures, to lessen their environmental effects. The new Eagle Veracruz is a prime example of Singapore’s dedication to sustainability, with its dual-fuel LNG technology and energy-efficient design. The milestone falls in 2023, a year of notable expansion for the Port of Singapore. Bunker sales reached an all-time high of 81.8 million tons due to annual vessel arrivals exceeding three billion GT. The port, which handles 591.7 million tons of cargo annually, including a record 39 million TEU, continues to be a regional hub.

Singapore is still committed to adopting innovative technology and fuel alternatives. The city-state is committed to retaining its position as the premier bunkering port and hub in Southeast Asia, as seen by initiatives involving methanol bunkering and current research on ammonia.
