Two Loaded Bulk Carriers Collided On Yangtze River

The 48,800-dwt Marshall Islands-registered Omega (built back in 2004) reportedly collided with the 46,000-dwt Cook Islands-registered Mirabella (built in 1997) 16 nm to the north of the Yangtze River estuary, per cargo claims expert WK Webster.

Both vessels have had water ingress. Omega was loaded with 47,000 tons of steel billets during the collision and is reportedly at risk of sinking owing to damages to the vessel’s number five cargo hold.

Mirabella was loaded with nearly 45,000 tons of iron ore and was heading from Tuticorin in India to Taicang in China. All crew members are reported to be safe.

Mirabella is managed by Safe Sea Services based in Lebanon, while Turkish firm Gamma Shipping contains the Omega. The firms have been contacted for comments.

The Donghai Rescue Bureau said that its teams successfully prevented the Turkish bulker from drifting in extreme winds and rough waves and that Mirabella had been damaged and partly flooded. Still, it had managed to anchor in safe waters following the incident.

Authorities further informed that 21 crew members on Omega were rescued after abandoning the vessel.
