U.S. Navy Intercepts Houthi-launched Missile Targeting Tanker In Gulf of Aden

On Feb. 24 at 11:45 p.m. (Sanaa time), the Iranian-led Houthis shot an anti-ship ballistic missile that was strategically aiming the M/V Torm Thor, a U.S.-owned, flagged, and also U.S.-operated chemical or oil product tanker in the waters of the Gulf of Aden. That missile reportedly impacted the water, resulting in no damages or injuries.

In self-defence earlier in the evening, about 9 p.m. (Sanaa time), U.S. Central Command soldiers shot down two of the unmanned aerial vehicles that were on a one-way attack over the southern Red Sea. A third UAV has also crashed due to an assessed in-flight failure.

CENTCOM forces have identified the UAVs and determined they were posing an imminent risk to merchant vessels and the U.S. Navy vessels in the region.

Such actions are undertaken to safeguard freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and, at the same time, more secure for the U.S. Navy and merchant vessels.
