HII declared that its Newport News Shipbuilding division had finished the initial set of sea trials for its submarine, New Jersey. The latter belongs to the Virginia class attack fleet of submarines. New Jersey has reportedly spent many days at sea to test the boat’s systems and components.
The testing phase included submerging the submarine for the first time and also carrying out high-speed maneuvers while submerged and also while on the surface. The NNS teams will continue this testing program before handing the boat to the US Navy.
Taking the New Jersey out for the first time is a significant milestone and the first-ever massive test of its capabilities while at sea, mentioned Jason Ward, the NNS VP of Virginia-class submarine building. Both New Jersey and the crew members performed incredibly well. This was a massive team effort among the shipbuilders, many suppliers nationwide, and, of course, the crew members.
The team looks forward to handing over New Jersey to the Navy as soon as possible so that it can commence its services to the nation.
The boat, the 23rd Virginia class submarine, was christened in 2021 (November). New Jersey is the eleventh one to get delivered by NNS. It is the first-ever submarine designed with some modifications for gender integration.
