MAN Energy Solutions recently announced a landmark milestone in pollution reduction technology, producing a vast Cluster 5 Double Layer SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converter for MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd.
This fantastic device is ammonia-ready and can cut nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90%. It is the largest unit of its sort that the company has ever produced. Typically used onboard cruise liners and commercial vessels, this SCR system marks a crucial turning point in environmental advancement.
Dr. Daniel Struckmeier, Head of Sales and Licensing for Turbochargers and Exhaust Gas Treatment in APAC, expressed his enthusiasm and lauded this as a historic development. He emphasized that it was the world’s first SCR explicitly designed for an ammonia engine and the most enormous high-pressure SCR unit ever built by MAN Energy Solutions.
The completion of the Factory Acceptance Test highlights the knowledge and commitment of everyone involved in this significant undertaking.
The Cluster 5 Double Layer SCR is ready for mass production with its impressive 3,900 mm diameter and 28 metric tons of weight. Before it left Dalian, China, for Tamano, Japan, MAN Energy Solutions and MITSUI E&S thoroughly inspected it to ensure quality assurance.
The SCR demonstrates MAN Energy Solutions’ dedication to improving ship performance in terms of emissions, efficiency, and operation. The MAN SCR control systems improve the efficiency and dependability of the entire system. They are smoothly integrated into the engine management system and specifically designed for the fuel-injection system and turbocharger.
Compared to third-party SCR systems, combining MAN SCR and optimal control techniques guarantees fuel-oil consumption savings of up to 2.5 g/kWh and up to 90% reductions in NOx emissions. These systems also ensure adherence to IMO Tier III rules and improve fuel and urea usage efficiency, reinforcing their pioneering status in sustainable marine technology.
