Russia Appoints New Navy Chief Following Black Sea Setback

Russia appoints a new Navy chief following the Black Sea Fleet’s defeat by Ukraine. The new leader of Russia’s Navy was publicly introduced in his new capacity for the first time on Tuesday at a ceremony, according to RIA, confirming Adm. Alexander Moiseev’s appointment as the Navy’s acting head.

His appointment came after the world witnessed a series of Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, which is stationed in Crimea, which Moscow annexed from Kyiv in 2014.

Moiseev succeeds Nikolai Yevmenov, the Navy’s former commander. RIA broadcast footage of a ceremony in the port of Kronstadt, near St Petersburg, where Moiseev was introduced as the acting leader.

Alexander Moiseev brings extensive experience serving on nuclear submarines for over 29 years and has also been awarded a Hero of Russia, the country’s topmost military award.

Moiseev was appointed interim commander and subsequently commander of the Black Sea Fleet in 2018, followed by commander of the Northern Fleet (2019) before taking his current position.
