U.S. & India Conduct The Largest Amphibious Exercise Held Between The Two Nations To Date

The United States and India launched Exercise Tiger TRIUMPH 2024, a cooperative military exercise to improve communication and coordination between the two countries.

The exercise, held near Visakhapatnam and Kakinada in India, commenced on March 18 with the arrival of the USS Somerset (LPD 25). It was followed by an opening ceremony onboard the INS Jalashwa (L41), formerly the USS Trenton, on March 19. Tiger TRIUMPH is in its third iteration, focusing on the Tri-Services India-U.S. amphibious exercise.

The exercise, scheduled from March 18 to March 31, 2024, focuses on improving joint and combined interoperability for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. Participants will follow standard operating procedures (SOP) and participate in cultural exchanges and sporting contests.

U.S. and Indian forces will perform the combined operational maneuver, command and control, and cooperative sustainment operations throughout the exercise, which has a harbour and sea phase.

Important officials from both nations, including Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, the flag officer commanding in chief of the Eastern Naval Command, and U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, highlighted the exercise’s importance during a news briefing.

They highlighted the two militaries’ growing relationship and the importance of smoothly integrating their capabilities to ensure effective response in an emergency.

The USS Somerset, members of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, the USS Halsey (DDG 97), a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft from Patrol Squadron (V.P.) 47, and assets from the U.S. Army and Air Force are participating in this combined exercise. The Indian force consists of men from several military branches, ships, and aircraft.

The exercise marks the largest and most sophisticated collaboration between U.S. and Indian forces. It includes several branches of force and focuses on improving interoperability and cooperation. The drill highlights the two countries’ strengthening defence ties regarding regional safety concerns.

In recent years, US-India military exercises have become more complex, reflecting the two countries’ growing strategic alliance. Tiger TRIUMPH and other similar exercises are intended to improve mutual defence cooperation and increase the synchronisation of the two military services.

In addition to collaborative drills, India is considering purchasing American military equipment to improve its capabilities in surveillance and anti-submarine warfare areas.

The United States and India’s defence cooperation is expanding, as seen by recent defence agreements such as the commissioning of Sikorsky MH-60R helicopters and the approval of the sale of General Atomics MQ-9B SeaGuardians.
