Shipping Industry Leaders To Study Ammonia As Marine Fuel On The US West Coast

Five maritime industry players have created a partnership to study the establishment of a supply chain (jointly) for the provision of clean ammonia ship-to-ship (abbreviated as the StS) bunkering on the West Coast of the US.

The American Bureau of Shipping (abbreviated as ABS), CALAMCO, Sumitomo Corporation, Fleet Management Limited, and TOTE Services have reportedly signed a MoU on 29 March, intending to become one of the pioneers in setting up a robust yet competitive supply chain for clean and sustainable ammonia StS bunkering on the West Coast of the US.

The MoU in place will witness the partners conducting a joint feasibility analysis at the ports of Benicia, Oakland, and other major ports near the West Coast of the US.

The Port of Benicia is among the critical vehicle-handling ports on the West Coast, while the Port of Oakland ranks among the top ten container ports in the US.

As illustrated, the feasibility investigation aims to explore the likelihood of using CALAMCO’s current ammonia storage terminal at the Stockton port for a pilot demonstration scheme of ammonia bunkering for car carriers that call at the Benicia port as well as container vessels calling at the port of Oakland as the foremost step toward broad adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel on the West Coast.

ABS is also going to conduct a risk analysis of ammonia StS Bunkering. It will also coordinate with the relevant authorities in the US to establish operational guidelines and port regulations.

CALAMCO will also carry out a feasibility investigation of the ammonia-loading operation from the terminal to ammonia bunkering articulated tug-barge (abbreviated as AB-ATB), while Fleet Management Limited is going to work on developing safe as well as reliable ammonia bunkering techniques from a ship manager’s angle and deliver technical support in the design development of the AFV and the AB-ATB.

Sumitomo will structure, integrate, and promote an end-to-end supply chain of green and blue ammonia that includes sourcing, storage, transportation, and bunkering.

TOTE Services will also develop AB-ATB and safe, secure, and reliable ammonia bunkering methods from AB-ATB’s purview, leveraging experiences in LNG bunkering in the US.

ABS, Sumitomo, Fleet Management Limited, and TOTE are participating in similar feasibility research that examines establishing a comprehensive and competitive supply chain for green ammonia vessel-to-vessel bunkering on the East Coast.

Other participants are Georgia Ports Authority, A.P. Moller–Maersk, Savage Services, and Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping.
