Consulmar Executes World’s First Zero Emissions Mooring Service Of A Tanker

Consulmar, a maritime services firm, has executed a zero-emissions mooring operation for a tanker that is claimed to be the world’s first such operation.

This operation was conducted at an offshore multiple buoy mooring site two miles off the Port of Castellón in Spain, close to the BP refinery.

Consulmar used CASTALIA, its electric line handling tug, to tow the steel mooring lines from the vessel to the five mooring buoys, reflecting a significant step forward in the maritime industry’s transition to more sustainable practices.

The tanker vessel ARCHANGEL, which measures 274 meters in length and has a gross tonnage of 85,474, was moored utilizing the 3-ton pulling capacity of CASTALIA, which is powered entirely by electric propulsion.

Besides mooring, the multipurpose CASTALIA, measuring 12.50 meters in length and 5 meters in beam, also plays a vital role in various port activities, including the collection of MARPOL liquid and solid wastes, transporting personnel and provisions, and oil spill response activities.

By utilizing CASTALIA, Consulmar is projected to reduce yearly CO2 emissions by over 200 tons significantly, a substantial step towards minimizing environmental impact during port operations.

Consulmar’s achievement is a testament to the firm’s unwavering commitment to decarbonizing activities, a dedication that will shape the future of the maritime industry.

As part of this project in the Port of Castellón, Consulmar is using electricity from photovoltaic installations to power its fleet of boats and electric vehicles, contributing to a sustainable transition toward cleaner energy sources and lowering its carbon footprint.
