In a recent development, India became a part of the US-led navy alliance, the CMF or Combined Maritime Forces. This alliance has 43 countries as its members.
Political experts view it as a vital change from India’s policy of autonomy in defence to collaborating with other nations.
In April, the Indian Navy undertook a mission called Crimson Barracuda, in which it confiscated around 940 kg of cocaine. This operation was done jointly with the CMF.
Though countries joining international forces for joint naval or military missions is not new, political experts say this collaboration between India and CMF was different.
It comes at a crucial juncture when India faces a growing Chinese presence in the region. In the past few years, China has been quite aggressive in asserting its dominance in the Indo-Pacific and has deployed several ships in the Indian Ocean.
India, being China’s neighbour, strives to counter Beijing by forging a partnership with the US-led Naval Alliance.
