U.S. Navy Forces Destroy Houthi Drones Over The Gulf Of Aden And Red Sea

In a series of recent incidents, the United States Central Command has thwarted repeated attacks launched by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The most recent incident took place on May 12, 2024, at 3:30 a.m. local time when US Centcom forces successfully intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial system launched by the Houthis over the Gulf of Aden.

The action was taken to prevent potential danger to coalition forces and merchant vessels in the area.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or damages to any vessels.

This incident follows a series of similar strikes carried out by the Houthis.

On May 11, 2024, US Centcom forces destroyed three unmanned aerial systems launched by the Houthis over the Red Sea.

No damages were reported to the merchant vessels or coalition forces.

Additionally, on May 10, 2024, at approximately 8:45 p.m. local time, a coalition aircraft engaged and neutralized another Houthi-launched UAS over the Gulf of Aden, causing no damage to vessels or crew.

These proactive efforts were implemented to reduce the immediate threat posed by the Houthi-launched drones to coalition forces and merchant vessels travelling through the Red Sea, Bab al Mandab Strait and Gulf of Aden.

The Houthis have increased their attacks in recent months, alleging that their campaign is directed at Israel-linked vessels and individuals travelling to Israel to put pressure on Israel to discontinue its assault in the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

Yemeni officials, including Foreign Minister Shaya Mohsen Al-Zindani, have condemned their actions, accusing the militia of disrupting Yemen’s peace efforts.

According to Al Zindani, Yemen’s government and the Houthis were to finalise a UN-brokered peace agreement with Oman and Saudi Arabia.

However, the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea halted the progress, indicating their disapproval of peace talks.

Al-Zindani also accused Iran of helping the Houthis and demanded an end to Iranian interference in Yemeni affairs.

Meanwhile, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg has stepped up his attempts to broker a peace agreement between Yemen’s warring factions.

Gundberg recently visited Aden, Yemen’s internationally recognised government headquarters, to meet with leaders and advocates for the signing of the peace roadmap.

Grundberg’s diplomatic efforts come amid growing international concern about the situation in Yemen.

Stakeholders are increasingly acknowledging the importance of a peaceful settlement to the conflict.
