US Navy’s Destroyer USS Carney Returns Home From Historic Middle East Deployment

Adm. Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations, welcomed the guided-missile destroyer USS Carney (of the Arleigh Burke-class) crew to the United States following a historic mission in the Middle East on May 10.

Franchetti said she could not be more proud of what the Carney team has done since September.

They were called to action on the first day they entered the US 5th Fleet and conducted 51 engagements in six months.

She talked about the numerous lives saved, how they helped maintain the free flow of commerce and stood up for the rules-based international order and all other values.

She added that watching America’s Warfighting Navy in full action was eye-watering.

Carney was performing routine operations in the US 6th Fleet when Hamas launched an attack on Israel on 7 October.

Carney stepped into the US 5th Fleet area of operations on 18 October, ready to carry out operations supporting maritime security and stability in defence of the US, Allies, and partner interests.

Throughout the vessel’s seven-month deployment, Carney destroyed the Houthi-launched weapons, including land attack cruise and anti-ship ballistic missiles, along with unmanned systems.

Besides, Carney also conducted two defensive strikes against the Houthi targets in Yemen, demolishing 20 targets and destroying a medium-range, Iranian-launched ballistic missile.

During her visit to the vessel, the CNO recognized 14 Sailors for their extraordinary achievements during the deployment.

As Surface Warriors, they train for this. They train to the level of ultimate boldness and readiness, with a commitment to the warfighting superiority exhibited on the world stage for each one to see.

They did what they were trained to do, stated Franchetti.

She expressed it was a pleasure for her to be on board today and have the opportunity to welcome one back and give a tremendous Bravo Zulu for an exceptionally well-done job.

Carney started from the Naval Station Mayport on 27 September last year on an independent deployment to the US 5th and 6th Fleet’s areas of operation.

When deployed, the Carney mainly operated with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group.

On joining the US 6th Fleet, it initially operated with the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group.
