U.S. Navy Gets Its Latest Arleigh Burke-Class Destroyer, Future USS John Basilone

The US Navy has formally accepted the delivery of the future USS John Basilone (DDG 122), marking an important milestone in naval readiness and capability.

The destroyer, named after Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, a renowned World War II veteran, was transferred from manufacturer General Dynamics Bath Iron Works on July 8.

Prior to delivery, the USS John Basilone underwent extensive at-sea and pier-side trials to ensure operational readiness.

DDG 122, designed as a Flight IIA variation of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, can perform multiple missions, including anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-surface warfare.

Navy Captain Seth Miller, DDG 51 Class program manager at Program Executive Office Ships, emphasized the vessel’s strategic importance by stating that the future USS John Basilone will significantly expand the fleet’s capabilities and strengthen their advantage at sea.

DDG 122 and its sailors will serve as a living testament to its namesake’s perseverance and sacrifice.

Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery during the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Navy Cross posthumously for his heroism at Iwo Jima.

His heroism and selflessness continue to inspire future generations of Marines and sailors.

The USS John Basilone was christened in June 2022 and will be commissioned into active service in November.

Once commissioned, it will join the Navy’s operational forces, enhancing its defensive capabilities.

DDG 122’s delivery is part of a larger effort by General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, which is currently building six more Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

The development demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to maintaining a modern, resilient fleet that meets global security challenges.

The USS John Basilone is the Navy’s second ship to bear the name of Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, following the Gearing-class destroyer USS Basilone, which served from 1949 to 1977.

In 2016, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus spoke of the honour of naming a ship after such a renowned Marine Corps officer, stating that everyone who served onboard the USS John Basilone will continue his legacy of dedication and bravery.

With its delivery to the US Navy, the USS John Basilone is now ready to contribute to national defense while also honouring the memory of one of America’s most honoured war heroes.
