Latvia’s leading mobile communications firm, LMT, collaborated with port technical service provider SIA “LVR Flote” to unveil a cutting-edge 5G network solution at the port of Riga.
The event was historic since it was the first full-scale maritime 5G demonstration ever seen, exhibiting its application in aerial and underwater drone operations.
The demonstration, which took place aboard the icebreaker VARMA, showcased 5G technology’s real-time capabilities in sending enormous amounts of data, offering uninterrupted connectivity at sea, and permitting enhanced communication functionality.
Attendees, including delegations from LMT, the Riga Freeport Authority, the LVR Fleet, and German port personnel, witnessed firsthand the seamless integration of 5G across various devices, including drones and ships.
The demonstration featured the use of 5G’s multi-hop principle, which enabled strong communication between several vessels such as the icebreaker VARMA, hydrographic measuring drone OTTER, pilot ship DORE, and LMT’s 5G aerial drone.
The setup allowed for continued data exchange and video transmission even as ships moved around the port area, demonstrating 5G’s adaptability in demanding maritime situations.
Juris Binde, President of LMT, highlighted the transformative potential of 5G technology for maritime communications, stating, that the sea presents unique challenges for high-quality, rapid communications, which 5G technologies can effectively address.
The efforts they made to test and implement maritime 5G technologies have resulted in a remarkable demonstration that establishes a new regional and worldwide standard.
The implementation of 5G technologies at sea uses a chain approach, with network signals transferred from one ship to another, ensuring continuous communication between ships and ports.
This capability not only improves operating efficiency but also paves the way for new solutions in maritime logistics and port management.
Kaspars Ozoliņš, the board member of LVR Flote, emphasized the importance of the demonstration in displaying the potential of 5G for data interchange at sea and supporting digital innovation within the maritime sector.
The plan highlights the establishment of an innovation testbed at Riga Freeport, which will encourage collaboration with international partners to advance digitalization and system integration in port operations.
The successful collaboration between LMT and LVR Fleet is a significant step forward in marine technology, putting Latvia at the forefront of 5G deployment in the Baltic Sea region.
