World’s First Ferry To Use AI-Powered Surface Object Detection System Unveiled

Fred. Olsen Express has become the world’s first shipping company to use an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system to detect objects at sea.

The new system, installed on the trimaran Bajamar Express, uses multi-target thermal cameras and radar signal processing to improve safety by detecting surface objects at short and medium ranges.

The system, developed in partnership with Aeromarine and SEA.AI, signifies a major advancement in maritime safety.

The AI-powered technology improves detection capabilities by combining high-definition video processing with thermal cameras. It is currently in its final testing phase and will be implemented across the company’s fleet once validated.

The head of the technical department at Fred. Olsen Express, Iván Fernández highlighted the system’s impact, stating that these multi-objective thermal cameras are similar to a third officer always monitoring the bow and that the system warns when an object is detected, improving safety measures.

The SEA.AI equipment, installed on the ship’s exterior, consists of two high-resolution daytime cameras and two thermal cameras that identify floating obstacles such as containers, logs, and drifting vessels.

The system is effective at night and helps identify marine creatures, as reported on the Fred. Olsen Vigía platform.

The national and sales director of SEA.AI, Diogo Arreda, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating that they are honoured to launch the advanced technology in high-speed maritime transport with Fred. Olsen Express.

The SEA.AI system, first tested on sailing ships and inspired by automobile anti-collision technology, reduces “digital noise” from sea conditions to provide accurate object detection.

The system employs computer vision and deep learning to provide real-time visual and thermal data, displaying results on the bridge screen and automatically warning the crew when objects near the ship’s path.
