In the latest series of the Russian-Ukraine conflict, a ferry loaded with 30 tanks of fuel sank at the Russian port of Kavkaz in the southern Krasnodar area after being hit by an alleged Ukrainian attack on August 22, 2024.
The strike caused a massive fire on the vessel. However, an investigation is still underway.
Fyodor Babenkov, the district head of Temryuk, that includes the port area, confirmed that the attack severely damaged the ferry.
According to the governor of the Krasnodar area, 17 crew members were rescued, while two others are still missing. The ongoing rescue operation has yet to locate the missing crew members.

The attacked ferry, identified as the Conro Trader Ferry, was built in 1978 by HDW Kiel in Germany and is 358 feet (109 meters) long. The vessel was crucial for transporting rail cars and freight into Crimea.
According to the Russian state news agency TASS, the fire was limited to the ship and did not spread to other parts of the port. Additionally, a special train has been deployed to contain the fire onboard.
Russian media reports vary, with some claiming that only five crew members were onboard while others confirm that 17 were onboard.
The fire onboard the ferry is being controlled by over 100 personnel.

The port of Kavkaz, located on the eastern side of the Kerch Strait, is one of Russia’s main Black Sea ports. It handles both exports and fuel supplies to Crimea.
Due to its strategic importance, the port has been on the target list for Ukrainian attacks.
The incident marks the second attack on the Conro Trader ferry, which was previously damaged in an attack on May 30, 2024. Another ferry, the Slavyanin, was struck on July 28, 2024, at the same port.
Russian officials have temporarily closed the port of Kavkaz and suspended traffic on the Crimean Bridge due to concerns of potential further attacks.
Ukrainian officials have not yet responded to the incident.
