The Indian Navy is set to build a high-tech submarine and ship testing centre in the country, according to the Ministry of Defense.
It will be similar to the William B. Morgan Large Cavitation Channel that Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited during his recent four-day visit to the U.S.
This U.S. facility at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Memphis, is fitted with one of the world’s biggest and most advanced high-speed variable pressure water tunnel facilities.
This U.S. Navy facility allows research and development activities for designing submarines and ships and measuring the noise control efficiency of submarine propellors, torpedoes, etc., in a controlled environment.
It uses scale models to form simulations that generate precise data to help in design.
Rajnath Singh mentioned on X that he saw the experiments at this facility, and India and the U.S. look forward to collaborating and benefiting from each other.
The new facility in India will enable the nation to develop quieter and more advanced ships and submarines.
India is working on three projects, including nuclear attack submarines (SSNs), nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), and diesel-electric attack submarines (SSKs), as well as several new ship projects, including designing Project-18 next-gen destroyers.
India is also in talks with General Atomics to purchase 31 MQ-9B armed drones worth approximately $3.9 billion and to jointly manufacture General Electric’s GE F-414 jet engine in the country.
