The Yemeni Houthis have released a disturbing video of the explosions on a Greek oil tanker, Sounion, after it was attacked in the Red Sea.
The tanker was targeted using gunfire and multiple projectiles while en route from Basra, Iraq, to Cyprus on August 21, 2024.
MT Sounion, carrying 1,50,000 metric tons of crude oil at the time of the attack, is still burning days after the incident took place, posing a major environmental threat.
The Iranian-backed Houthis stated that the attack on the tanker was in retaliation to the vessel’s connection with Israeli interests and its violation of their ban on entry into ports in occupied Palestine.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree confirmed the attack in a televised speech.

The attacks resulted in the loss of the engine power and caused fire, leaving the vessel adrift.
A French naval destroyer safely rescued the tanker’s 25 crew members. The incident marks the third attack on a Delta Tankers vessel in the Red Sea this month.
The Houthis have targeted over 80 vessels with missiles and drones since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza in October.
On August 23, 2024, the U.S. military announced the killing of the senior leader of Hurras al-Din, an al-Qaeda-affiliated military group.
Abu Abdul Rahman Al Makki was a Hurras al-Din Shura Council member and senior leader directing terrorist operations from Syria.
