Lloyd’s Register (LR) has certified Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) Pacific cobalt, a 50,000 dwt mid-range chemical tanker built in 2020, with a first-class carbon capture system.
The vessel has been installed with Value Maritime’s Onboard Carbon Capture & Storage (OCCS) system estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by 40%.
The class notation, Emission Abatement Carbon Capture & Storage (EACCS) (Amine, HFO), confirms that the OCCS installation on the Pacific Cobalt meets rigorous standards Lloyd’s Register sets.
The notation comprises regulation requirements that address potential safety issues related to containment, electrical systems, materials, piping, structural integrity, and vessel integration.
Lloyd’s Register CEO Nick Brown stated that the class notation for an Onboard Carbon Capture and storage is the first for a vessel of this size and LR.
Brown adds that EPS’s commitment to onboard CCS aligns with IMO’s emission reduction targets and that the new notation will increase confidence in the technology’s role in decarbonizing shipping.
Value Maritime’s Filtree OCCS system, installed on the Pacific Cobalt, cleans sulfur oxide (SOx) exhaust while capturing CO2.
The system uses saltwater to remove up to 99.9% of sulfur oxide and 99% of particular matter from exhaust gases, while an amine-based compound captures the remaining CO2 at low temperatures.
The compound is stored onboard without liquefaction or pressurization, reducing the energy required for capture and storage.
The CO2-saturated amine is discharged at the port and replaced with a new amine.
Jurriaan Guljé, Operations Director at Value Maritime, described granting the first LR class notation for onboard carbon capture as an important milestone in the maritime industry. Guljé further stated that the accomplishment, made possible by the teamwork of EPS, LR, and Value Maritime, shows that sustainable shipping is becoming a reality.
Cyril Ducau, EPS’s CEO, highlighted the importance of the Pacific Cobalt upgrade as an important point in the company’s sustainable shipping journey. Ducau added that the collaboration with LR and Value Maritime is a step toward meeting the industry’s emissions reduction targets.
The Pacific Cobalt is one of three EPS mid-range tankers to be fitted with the carbon capture technology; assessments for the other two are now underway. This follows Lloyd’s Register’s Approval in Principle (AiP) for the Value Maritime Filtree System, granted in September 2022.
