3 Ghana Nationals Found Hiding Inside A Chinese Ship Docked At India’s Paradip Port, Probe Underway

Authorities at India’s Paradip Port in Odisha have detained three Ghana nationals who were found hiding aboard the MV Great Sheng Wen, a coal-laden cargo ship docked in a restricted area of the port on August 30, 2024.

Ports officials confirmed that the men, thought to be stowaways, are currently in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) custody.

The ship’s crew found the three Ghanaians while the vessel was anchored at the Paradip Port. The circumstances surrounding their boarding of the ship remain unclear.

The MV Great Sheng Wen, a Chinese bulk carrier sailing under the flag of Hong Kong, arrived in Paradip carrying coal from Russia for ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India.

Authorities reported 20 crew members on board, none of whom are Ghanaians. The three Ghana nationals were not listed among the crew members.

In response, the Immigration Department notified the vessel and instructed it not to deboard the people at any Indian Port.

The ship has been instructed to deliver its cargo immediately and depart from Paradip Port.

An investigation has been launched to determine the stowaways’ intent, their intended destination, and how they gained access to the ship.

Officials suspect the three individuals may have boarded the vessel in an African country in April before it set sail for Paradip.

Port security officials and the Immigration Department are conducting further inspections, and the CISF is maintaining tight security around the vessel as authorities try to solve the mystery of the three individuals on the ship.
