QatarEnergy Expands Fleet With 6 New QC-Max, The “World’s Largest LNG Vessels”

QatarEnergy and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) have signed a contract to construct six more QC Max LNG vessels.

The contract increases the total number of LNG vessels under QatarEnergy’s fleet expansion program to 128, including 24 QC-Max vessels.

The new vessels, with a capacity of 271,000 cubic meters each, will be the world’s largest LNG vessels ever built and delivered between 2028 and 2031.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Shanghai.

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Mr Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, Mr Chen Jianliang, Chairman of Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. Ltd., and Mr Hu Kai, President of China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd.

Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al-Thani, CEO of QatarEnergy LNG, Ms. Jia Haiying, CSSC’s CFO, and other senior QatarEnergy and CSSC officials also graced the ceremony with their presence.

Mr Al-Kaabi highlighted the agreement’s strategic importance, stating that it demonstrates QatarEnergy’s commitment to maintaining its leading position in the global LNG market.

Al-Kaabi emphasized the growing partnership between CSSC and Hudong-Zhonghua, recognizing them as the leading shipbuilders. He also highlighted the importance of these modern vessels in generating cleaner energy and facilitating a practical energy transition.

The order adds to a previous set of 18 QC-Max vessels recently commissioned from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard, bringing QatarEnergy’s total QC-Max vessels to 24. The total value of these orders is almost USD 8 billion.

The QC-Max vessels, built with cutting-edge technology, will enhance QatarEnergy’s ability to meet increasing global LNG demand while reiterating its commitment to operational excellence and environmental sustainability.

The vessels are designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while maintaining the highest safety and environmental standards.

The expansion is part of QatarEnergy’s plan to strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading LNG exporters. The North Field expansion project will increase Qatar’s liquefaction capacity from 77 million to 142 million tons annually by 2030.
