A life-threatening incident occurred at Keelung Port on October 14, 2024 (Monday) afternoon, when a newly delivered container crane collided with an existing STS crane, causing it to collapse.
The accident occurred at about 1400 hours when the heavy lift vessel Yuzhou Qi Hang was docking at Pier 20.
As the vessel approached, the new crane collided with the older structure, forcing it back until it rested on one pair of rail wheels before tipping over.
Surprisingly, the old crane fell intact rather than buckling, protecting nearby infrastructure from major damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, operations at the terminal were temporarily suspended.

The accident damaged four empty containers and one full container, and according to the Taiwanese news outlet ET Today, the cost of replacing the collapsed crane is expected to reach $40 million.
The port operator and vessel operator are discussing liability with their insurance providers.
Taiwan’s transportation regulatory body authorities were present at the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Container crane collisions, while rare, have occurred in the past. A similar incident occurred in March 2021 when the container ship OOCL Durban crashed with an STS crane, injuring a port employee and causing severe damage to other equipment.
