On the night of October 15, 2024, a ship sank at the port of Dakar in Senegal after colliding with an approaching bulk carrier, Zografia.
Per the local port authorities, the Zografia, a Greek-owned vessel that had survived a missile attack earlier this year, hit the freighter Princesse Jessica while it was docked at Pier 2, causing it to capsize and sink.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. GMT when the Zografia approached Dakar’s inner harbor.

The exact cause of the collision is still being investigated. However, officials have confirmed there were no casualties. After the collision, the Princesse Jessica immediately capsized and sank.
In a statement, the Port Autonome de Dakar informed the public that port operations would continue uninterrupted.
The agency also stated that such incidents might occur in any port and expressed confidence that Princesse Jessica would be refloated soon.
“The Port Autonome de Dakar is working closely with relevant authorities to minimize the impact and ensure operations continue smoothly,” the statement said.

In January 2024, the Zografia survived a missile attack while transiting the Red Sea. On January 16, a Houthi ballistic missile attacked the 55,000-dwt bulker, entering from the ship’s number two hold and exiting through the side of the hull.
The ship was in ballast then and incurred major damage, but it remained afloat. No injuries were reported, and the Zografia was diverted to a dock in Suez for repairs.
Local authorities are investigating the cause of the recent crash at Dakar port.
