CMA CGM Group, a French shipping company, has partnered with SUEZ, a water and waste management company, to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane annually by 2030.
The memorandum of understanding signed on October 18, 2024, aims to develop a sustainable fuel source that comes from waste recovery, which will greatly contribute to the low-carbon transition in shipping.
The collaboration will focus on three major areas:
Biomethane Supply: SUEZ will supply biomethane to CMA CGM’s gas-powered vessels, helping the shipping company reduce its carbon footprint.
Joint Investment Program: The collaboration will invest €100 million (around $108 million) initially to develop biomethane production facilities in Europe.
Research and Development: Both companies will collaborate on R&D efforts to develop innovative technologies, including hydrothermal gasification, to improve biofuel production.
Rodolphe Saadé, CMA CGM’s Chairman and CEO, stated the importance of the collaboration in advancing the biomethane sector in the shipping industry.
Saadé added that this collaboration is essential for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and increasing energy independence in Europe and France.
Sabrina Soussan, Chairman and CEO of SUEZ, was excited about the partnership with the shipping giant CMA CGM and discussed the potential of their circular solutions to help decarbonize Europe’s maritime transport sector.
CMA CGM’s effort comes as there are rising concerns about the availability of alternative fuels in the maritime industry.
The company has invested $18 billion in a fleet of 131 vessels capable of running on low-carbon energy like biomethane, biomethanol, and synthetic fuels, all of which are expected to be operational by 2028.
On the other hand, SUEZ has vast experience converting waste into energy, having converted five million tons last year and produced 382 GWh of biomethane.
This collaboration is a key step toward a more sustainable future for maritime transport, aligned with both firms’ goals of combating climate change through innovative solutions.
